Servant Leadership: More Than a “Kumbaya” Moment
One of the biggest misconceptions about servant leadership is that it’s all about sitting around a campfire, singing “kumbaya,” and hoping things magically work out. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Servant leadership is about making sure your team has everything they need to excel, setting an example through your actions, and genuinely getting to know the people you’re working with.
In my businesses, I spend a lot of time on the hiring process. When you get the right individuals in the right roles, it makes servant leadership feel natural. Hiring people who are both qualified and aligned with your culture means they’ll thrive under a supportive, mentor-focused structure.
Contrary to the misconception, servant leadership doesn’t mean letting everyone run wild with no accountability. It means showing your team what success looks like by modeling the behaviors you expect. People will follow leaders who walk the walk, not just talk the talk. In the end, it’s about building a culture of excellence, where every person feels seen, supported, and empowered to deliver exceptional results.
